WILMINGTON — Johnnye Carr Hilliard, 78, of Wilmington, NC died in the comfort of her home surrounded by family on November 26, 2024.
She was born on January 12, 1946 in Rose Hill, NC to the late Victor Patterson Carr and Mary Louise Cottle Carr.
Johnnye graduated from Wallace Rose-Hill High School in 1964. She graduated from Peace College in Raleigh and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Johnnye married the love of her life and high school sweetheart, David Bland Hilliard. They were married for forty-two years. She began teaching for New Hanover County Schools and continued substitute teaching. Her love for teaching carried over into Sunday school at Windermere Presbyterian Church where she was an active member since 1980.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her stepfather Jim Penney, her husband, and a daughter who died at birth.
She is survived by her children, Matthew David Hilliard and his wife Bess Hilliard and Mary Susan Brammer and her husband Scott Brammer, and grandchildren, Tory Elise Hilliard, Ella Grace Hilliard, Airlie Lillian Brammer, and David Howard Brammer. She is also survived by her sister Mary Jane Puckett, brother-in-law Ben Hilliard and his wife Brenda Hilliard, sister-in-law Doris Hilliard, and several nieces and nephews.
Johnnye enjoyed music, flowers, and loved being with her family. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother (Mimi). She will be dearly missed by all who loved her.
Funeral services will be 11 am Tuesday, December 10th at Windermere Presbyterian Church with Pastor John Pflug, Jr. officiating. Committal services will be at 2 pm following the service at Rockfish Presbyterian Church Cemetery; 6270 NC HWY 41, Wallace, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Windermere Presbyterian Church at 104 Windemere Road, Wilmington, NC 28405, or to the charity of one’s choice.
