SOUTHPORT — Harold Gene Hornick left this world Thursday November seventh twenty-twenty four.
Born November 25th, 1940 in Ridgeley, West Virginia, Gene graduated with a bachelors and masters degree in electrical engineering from Virginia Tech University. He moved to Garner, NC and was a career college educator. Gene taught at both NC State University and Wake Technical Community College, eventually becoming the Dean of Engineering at WTCC. Gene was also a small business owner, including a deli and catering business and other small business in Garner, NC.
In 1999, Gene moved to St.James and began work as an electrician, opening Gene Hornick Electric Company. He moved to Wilmington in 2022, where he enjoyed the fellowship of The Wilmington Seventh-Day Adventists church. He was an enthusiastic member, attending bible study weekly and services regularly.
Gene was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Sylvia (Carolan) Hornick; and parents Hesse Clay and Jesse May and sister Juanita Miller. He is survived by his sons Brad (Dannyelle) Hornick of Orlando, Florida and Trevor Hornick of Wilmington, NC. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Brandon Hornick of Denver, Colorado; Haylee Hornick of Castle Rock, Colorado; Lauren Hornick of New York City, NY; Dean Hornick of Raleigh, NC and Cole Hornick of Orlando, Florida. He is also survived by his sister Lorainne Scott of Ridgeley, West Virginia.
Gene was a devoted husband and father, spending years of his life coaching his sons’ sports teams, and later attending his grandchildren’s activities. Gene enjoyed tennis, golf and traveling via cruise ships. Gene’s smile would light up the room and no chocolate chip cookie was safe in his presence.
