WILMINGTON — Cecile Byrd Burkett, aged 97, passed away on November 1, 2024, in Wilmington, North Carolina. Born on March 11, 1927, to Archie and Mary Jane Byrd, Cecile spent her childhood in the nurturing environment of Acme Delco, where she attended both primary and high school.
Cecile dedicated the early years of her life to raising her four loving children, imbuing in them the values of family and togetherness that she held so dear. Her professional life included a significant tenure at Corning Glass Works, where she contributed diligently for eight years.
A woman of profound faith, Cecile and her mother were devoted members of Livingston Baptist Church. Her spiritual life was a cornerstone of her existence, providing strength and community throughout her years.
Known for her exceptional country cooking, Cecile’s culinary skills were only matched by her green thumb, as she also cherished gardening, tending to her flowers and vegetables with great care and joy. Her home was not only a welcoming space for her family but also a hub of activity where friends and neighbors were often greeted with warmth.
Cecile’s life was enriched by the love of her extensive family. She is survived by her children, Ron Burkett and Jeannie, Mike Burkett and Lisa, Sandra Burkett and Pete, Carolann King and Steve; her cherished grandchildren, Jamie Saffo and Tony, Melissa Melton and Ben, Vanessa Williams and Brad; and great-grandchildren, Austin Baker, Ryan Lazenby, Ayden Saffo, Michael Saffo, and Easton Williams. Her legacy continues through the lives of her numerous nieces and nephews. Cecile was preceded in death by her late husband, Harvey Burkett, her parents and brothers, Ardsly, James, and Curt Byrd.
A private graveside service will be held for immediate family members. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Saint Jude’s Hospital, reflecting Cecile’s deep love for children.
Cecile Burkett will be remembered as a beacon of love and strength, whose legacy will continue to influence and inspire all who knew her.
