WILMINGTON — Laura Miller Humphries, 92, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, September 13, 2024. She was surrounded by family and friends who she loved so well.
Laura is survived by: her daughter Lea H. Powell of Wilmington and children; Jeff Schneider of CA and Dan Schneider (Karen) of Wilmington; her son Scott M. Humphries (Dawn) of Hampstead and children Tatham Stevens (Lyle) of SC and Weston Humphries (Kayla) of Wilmington; and her Daughter Paula H. Starling (Jeffrey) of Wilmington and children Abbey Nobles (Brian) of Wilmington and Sam Starling (Savannah) of Wilmington. Laura is also survived by her great-grandchildren: Jillian, Saylor, Mabreigh, and Holt Schneider; Layne, Parker and Lyla Rose Stevens; Eliza and Della Humphries; and little Sammy Nobles.
Laura is preceded in death by her parents Ernest Edward Miller and Addie Laura Nicholson, the love of her life Samuel Lee Humphries and her grandson Steven Andrew Schneider.
Laura grew up in Gaffney, SC. She was a cheerleader at Gaffney High School and married her sweetheart, quarterback Sam Humphries. An Air Force career of Sam’s took them all over the USA and Japan. They both loved the travel and the life-long friends they made. She always would say she loved to look out her kitchen window and see Mt. Fuji! They eventually retired here to Wilmington where Laura worked off and on in the book-keeping, secretarial and office administration fields. At other times, to her families’ delight, she was a stay-at-home Mom.
Laura was a wonderful country cook and welcomed anyone and everyone into her home with lots of great meals, fun and love. She always set a beautiful table even on weeknights. Laura lived independently until age 90. Her family would like to thank the nurses and caregivers at Peak Resources for their care of our Mom. Many special employees treated Momma like family. We are humbled by that. Always quick to laugh, even at herself, that laughter, smile and love she freely gave will be missed dearly by all who knew her.
A celebration of life will be held at a later time.
On line condolences may be sent here.
