WILMINGTON — Mary Thompson, a proud South High Packer, was born and raised in South Omaha, Nebraska. She was the beloved daughter of Alberto and Eleanor Castillo. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Carlos Castillo, and her sisters Debbie Sanchez, Eleanor Parker, and Lilia Castillo.
Mary is survived by her husband of fifty-three years, Ben Thompson. Together, they built a loving family, including their sons Ben Thompson III and Michael Thompson. Ben and his wife Jamie Falvo blessed Mary with grandsons Walker and Wesley, while Michael and his wife Kara blessed her with grandsons Mason and Avery. Mary also leaves behind her brothers Al Castillo and Michael Castillo, as well as her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Becky and Forrest Rollins, and Timmy and Cathy Thompson. She is also survived by her Aunt and Uncle, Mary and John Ojeda, and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.
After completing Business College, Mary embarked on a career in banking. However, her true calling came when her boys reached school age, and she began a fulfilling 20-year career as a teacher’s assistant at Lynn Road Elementary in Raleigh, NC. Mary was known for her dedication to her students and her warm, nurturing spirit.
In 2004, Mary and Ben retired to Wilmington, NC, where they embraced a new chapter of their lives. They formed many lifelong friendships, often found dancing to beach music and enjoying the sand and surf. Mary’s vibrant personality and love for life left an indelible mark on everyone who knew her. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Thursday, September 5, 2024, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 6650 Carolina Beach Road, Wilmington, NC 28412.
Following mass, a Celebration of Life is planned at the Fairfield Park Clubhouse from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., 1131 Island Cove Road Wilmington, NC. All are welcome.
