WILMINGTON — Gene Edward Malpass, Sr., born on February 10, 1937, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2024, at the age of 87.
A man of devoted faith, Gene was a faithful member of the Church of God denomination, finding strength and compassion in his belief throughout his life. Gene’s favorite verse was, John 3:16, which was his love for salvation. He loved sharing the Love of God with his ministry, playing his guitar and singing about God.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Grady Malpass and Alice Hufham Malpass, and his beloved son, Gene Edward “Eddie” Malpass, Jr; and Gene’s brothers and sisters.
Gene is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Betty Carroll Malpass. He leaves behind his cherished children: Debbie Dennis (Doyle) of Bolivia, David Malpass of Shallotte, and Janet Nutley (Tom) of Supply. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Kristie “Michelle” Soles (Danny), Natalie Haycox (Connor), Lillie Malpass, Jessica Malpass, Randi Malpass, Quinton Malpass, Cienna Malpass, and Elizabeth “EB” Nutley; along with numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will all miss him dearly.
One of his proudest times was when he served in the Army National Guard as a young man; he was a true Patriot. During Gene’s professional career he was a dedicated and hardworking truck driver for Yellow Freight. He retired after many years of loyal service, and if you knew him, many times you would find him on the golf course instead.
A graveside service to honor Gene’s life will be held on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at 11 a.m. in Oleander Memorial Gardens, led by Rev. Anthony Clemmons.
Gene will be remembered for his steadfast dedication to his faith, his family, and his profession. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
