James William “Skipper” Peach, Sr., 78

WILMINGTON — James William “Skipper” Peach, Sr., aged 78, of Wilmington, NC, passed away on August 18, 2024 in Wilmington, NC, from complications due to multiple health issues that occurred over the last several months. Born in Salem, OH, on June 15, 1946, Jim exemplified a life of dedication, strength, and unfaltering love for his family and country.

Jim’s journey was one marked by proud service and selfless acts. He served diligently in the United States Navy, undertaking multiple overseas duties and cruises. As a recruiter, he inspired countless individuals to serve their nation. Jim retired as a Senior Electrical Technician after a commendable 20-year tenure with the Navy. Following his retirement, he continued his passion for electronics by teaching at the College of Lake County (CLC) in Lake County, IL, as well as at Great Lakes Naval Training Center. His students and colleagues remember him for his expertise, patience, and commitment to education.

An enthusiast of sports, Jim found joy in bowling, golf, baseball and football. He was an ardent supporter of the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Indians (now Guardians), and The Ohio State Buckeyes. His passion for football was evident as he never missed a game, cheering on his favorite teams with zeal. Beyond sports, Jim had a soft spot for his pets, who brought him much comfort and companionship.

Jim was a fantastic provider for his family. During his travels overseas, he always thought of his beloved wife, Hilda, bringing back little trinkets and gifts that brightened her days. Their bond, built over 52 wonderful years, was a testament to their enduring love and partnership. Despite his health challenges over the last several years, Jim’s spirit remained unbroken. He cherished his routine of enjoying four over-easy eggs (sometimes sunny side up, depending on the chef) every morning, showcasing his perseverance and zest for life until the very end.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Margaret Peach, stepmother Mildred Peach, and son Robert Powell. Jim’s legacy lives on through his surviving family: his cherished wife Hilda Wright Peach, his devoted son James William Peach, II., and his loving sister Fran Ellis. Jim also leaves behind many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

A gathering of friends and family will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2024, from 10 a.m. to noon at Wilmington Funeral & Cremation. Visitors are invited to come share in memories of Jim and provide condolences to his family during this trying time.

Jim was not only a decorated veteran but also a loving husband, father, brother, and friend. His life, filled with courage and kindness, serves as an inspiration to all who knew him. He will be forever remembered and deeply missed.
