WILMINGTON — Alex McEachern Efird, of Wilmington, NC, passed away on August 5, 2024.
Alex was born in Wilmington, NC on May 11, 1936, the son of the late Hazel McEachern Efird and Claud Lee Efird.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Edmond Efird II; daughters, Carol Lee Efird Smith and Grace Flower Efird and brother-in-law, James William Gramentine.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Ruth; son, Alex McEachern Efird, Jr.; grandchildren, Robert Tucker Smith III, Ruth Alexandra Smith and Alex Efird Smith.
Alex graduated from New Hanover High School and received a Bachelor of Industrial Engineering from North Carolina State University, a Master of Science in Engineering from University of Akron and an Executive MBA from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, the Cape Fear Country Club and the Carolina Yacht Club. He was a Lieutenant and Captain in the US Army Reserve and US Army for eight years and served in Korea postwar. Career assignments included Babcock and Wilcox Engineering, Bulk Haulers, and as the co-owner of Mid-Atlantic Moving & Storage and Cardinal Moving and Storage. He was a lifetime golfer and member of St. James Episcopal Church and very happy to have had such a long and fulfilling life and wonderful friends and family.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 24, 2024, at Oakdale Cemetery.
A reception will follow at Claire Efird’s residence, 5426 Efird Rd., Wilmington, NC 28409.
