BURGAW — It is with profound sadness yet deep gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Robert “Pete” Baxley, who departed this world on July 21, 2024, at the age of 78. Born in Fayetteville, NC, Pete’s journey through life was one marked by unwavering dedication to his family, country, and community.
Pete spent his formative years in Cross Creek Court in Fayetteville, NC, where he first demonstrated his commitment to service as a lifeguard at Lamon Street Pool. His early experiences shaped a work ethic that saw him dedicate 40 years to the concrete construction business. Beyond his professional endeavors, Pete proudly served four years of active duty in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, aboard the USS Independence, embodying the spirit of a true patriot.
A man of many interests, Pete was the epitome of a father and husband, deeply dedicated to his family. He was not just a mentor and storyteller but also a humorist who brought joy and wisdom to those around him. His legacy is carried forward by his beloved wife Anna P. Baxley, with whom he shared 56 beautiful years of marriage after meeting her while on leave.
Pete’s commitment to community service was evident through his involvement in various organizations. He was a proud member of Kiwanis, the Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry, the Lafayette Society, and a 4th Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus. He also dedicated his time as a volunteer at St. Joseph’s Food Pantry, always seeking to uplift those in need.
Preceded in death by his parents, Robert Carlton Baxley, Sr., Lois Tyndall Jackson, and stepfather C.D. Jackson; brothers Ted Ellis, Bill Ellis, Tommy Baxley, Jimmy Baxley, and Jeff Baxley; and sister Linda Hudson, Pete is now reunited with those who went before him.
He leaves behind a loving family who will cherish his memory: his devoted wife Anna P. Baxley; son Peter Baxley (Jenifer); daughter Laura Baxley Potter (Max); brothers Lannie Ellis (Betty) and Tony Baxley; sisters Betsy Massengill, Lisa Signorile, Sara Tate, and Brinda Howland; grandchildren Greylen Baxley, Rosser Baxley, Max Potter, and Morgan Ledbetter (Brian); great-grandson Harbor Ledbetter; and Nico Steinmetz and Michael Pjetraj, who held a special place in Pete’s heart. He will be greatly missed by many other extended family members and friends.
A Memorial Mass will be held to honor Pete’s life at St. Therese Catholic Church on Friday, July 26, 2024, at noon, followed by a Graveside Service at Oleander Memorial Gardens. Pete will be laid to rest with the dignity befitting a man of his character, with military honors rendered by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. All are welcome to return to St. Therese Catholic Church following the inurnment for a reception, where we will share memories and stories of Pete’s extraordinary life.
