LELAND — Elizabeth Ava Shurtzer, age 84, of Leland, NC passed away Sunday Morning July 21, 2024. At North Chase Rehabilitation and Nursing Center Wilmington, NC.
She was born on January 20, 1940 in Nahunta, NC the daughter of the late Montie Elmore and Alvin Elmore, her husband James Shurtzer, a son, Kenneth Shurtzer, a grandson, Richard Elmore, Jr and Avery McArdell.
Being raised in Wayne County, where she farmed tobacco and corn with her family, until she began her career in factory work, until the birth of her eldest son, Richard Elmore. Mrs. Shurtzer then began taking care of her father. After the passing she became a waitress at a truck stop, where she met her husband, James Alward Shurtzer. They married and had four children.
Mrs. Shurtzer is survived by her children, Richard Elmore, Sr., James B. Shurtzer (Jennie Shurtzer), Elizabeth Reynolds (Melvin Reynolds) and Ginger Desfonds (Joseph Desfonds); two special daughters, Kim Johnston and Nicole Jenkins; fourteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; her special baby girl, Hope, holding her heart.
A celebration of her life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday July 27, 2024 at First Baptist Church of Leland.
