WILMINGTON — Laura Lynn Washkau, 66, passed away peacefully on July 10th, 2024 at Lower Cape Fear Lifecare, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Plainfield, New Jersey on January 15, 1958, to Robert and Barbara Post, the fifth of seven daughters. She was a graduate of Watchung Hills Regional High School in 1976 and went on to raise her daughters and enjoyed careers in the public library system, the local school district, and various retail positions.
She was a resident of New Jersey most of her life until she moved to Wilmington, North Carolina, in 2018.
She is survived by her two beloved daughters from her marriage to Richard Washkau: Alicia McCrary (husband Nathaniel) of York, Pennsylvania, and Keira Fort (husband Daniel) of Lebanon, New Jersey; two loving grandchildren, Carter and Aria; and six sisters: Claudia “Mickey” Peek, Donna Post Guglielmo, Jo Ann Law, Janet Post Blevin, Ruth Rillo, Katherine Post, and several nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
She enjoyed spending quiet afternoons immersed in a good book, often finding solace and inspiration within the pages. Walking was another cherished pastime, offering her a chance to connect with nature and find peace.
She was a talented knitter and created beautiful, handmade pieces that will be treasured by family and friends for years to come. The beach was her sanctuary, a place where she found joy in the sound of the waves and the feel of the sand beneath her feet.
She had a special place in her heart for animals, particularly cats and dogs, whose companionship brought her immense happiness.
A private memorial will be held among family. Special thanks to the staff at Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington, NC, for their compassionate care.
