BURGAW — Oliver Lamon Spainhour Jr, known by his friends and loved ones as “Big Daddy” passed away on Monday, June 17th 2024 at his hunting camp in Burgaw, North Carolina, which was Lamon’s happy place.
He was born to Frankie Reeves and Oliver Lamon Spainhour Sr on August 17th, 1940 in Birmingham, Alabama. Lamon spent his college years at NC State and East Carolina University, where we feel confident he left his mark as he studied construction. He later served in the United States Navy as a motorboat operator from 1960 through 1963, before enjoying a successful career as a general contractor, and was a member of the Homebuilder’s Association.
Lamon was an avid fisherman and hunter and loved fishing almost as much as he loved his beloved wife Nan.
He and Nan are long-term members of The Little Chapel on the Boardwalk Presbyterian Church, and have spent many hours enjoying fellowship within the congregation.
Lamon will be remembered for his larger-than-life personality, quick wit, and joy for life. He will always be remembered by his close friends and beach neighbors for the famous Sunday fundays on his porch listening to the Big Kahuna Beach Party, watching golf and always, always having a good time. His sons were his best fishing buddies, and he would beam with pride when talking about their athletic accomplishments. His children and grandchildren, (whom he could never stop talking about), marked a legacy that made him as proud as a father and grandfather could be.
Lamon is survived by his wife of 30 years Nan Spainhour, sons Oliver Lamon Spainhour III and Charles Reeves Spainhour and wife, Luanne Spainhour, grandchildren Logan, Peyton, Oliver, Keenan, Ford, Sydney, and Harlow, sister Patricia Creech and husband, Leonard Creech, nieces Jessica and Judy, and nephews William, Brent, and Scott, along with thousands of friends and acquaintances he touched over his long and very well lived life.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Little Chapel on the Boardwalk or The American Heart Association.
In the words of Big Daddy, everyone’s favorite entertainer and storyteller, “we are all here for a good time, not a long time.”
