SOUTHPORT — Galen Roy Garren, 73, of Southport, NC died on March 11, 2024 after an extended illness.
He was born in Catawba County, NC on July 5, 1950 to Juanita and Earl Garren, and was one of five children who grew up in Hickory, NC. As a young man, he attended Hickory High School. He later volunteered to serve in the United States Marine Corps, completing a tour of duty during the Vietnam War. After completion of his service he attended technical college to become a welder, the beginning of a lifelong career that spanned more than three decades.
Galen’s life was characterized by curiosity and a deep love of nature. He enjoyed many years as an avid fisherman in the lakes, rivers, and oceans of the Southeastern U.S. He loved backroads, history, folklore, and antiques. Galen had an eye for the unusual and was always looking out for a great deal. His children are grateful for the many adventures they had by his side.
Galen was preceded in death by his parents, Juanita and Earl, and three siblings: Sandra Foster, Adrian Garren, and Kathy Garren.
His surviving family includes his devoted wife Paulett, who was his primary caretaker. He leaves behind five children – daughters Shelley Chappell of Oklahoma City, OK; Allison Mangkang of Asheville, NC; Melissa Barnes of Wilmington, NC; Jade James of West Union, SC; and son, Kade Garren of Wilmington, NC, as well as a sister, Yvonne Garren, of Morganton, NC. Galen was a proud papaw to 14 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
The family is especially thankful to all of Galen’s special friends that became part of his life as a member of his AA family – which gave him many joyful years of health and sobriety.
