WILMINGTON — James Harrell Gainey, born on February 4, 1941, in Brunswick County, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home on May 25, 2024, in Currie, North Carolina, at the age of 83.
James was a dedicated and hardworking individual who owned and operated Gainey’s Upholstery in Wilmington along with his wife ,for many years until his retirement. His commitment to his craft and his community was evident in the quality and care he put into his work.
Beyond his professional life, James was a talented musician with a passion for writing music and playing the guitar. He particularly enjoyed Gospel and Country music, and his melodies brought joy to many. Additionally, James took great pride in maintaining a vegetable garden at his home, where he found tranquility and satisfaction in tending to and caring for his plants and harvest.
James is preceded in death by his father, Willie Eudoras (Sam) Gainey; mother, Mary Bell Swinson Gainey; sister, Mary; and brothers, Murray, Bill, Kilby, and John Jarrell.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Brenda Gail Tyler Gainey. James also leaves behind his children, Tina Shepard Bivens, James Shepard, and Michael Shepard, as well as five daughters: Debbie, Diane, Janie, Angela, and Jamie Lynn. He is also survived by his brother Randy Gainey, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many dear friends who cherished his kindness and companionship.
James Harrell Gainey will be dearly missed by all who knew him. His legacy of love, music, and dedication will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
