WILMINGTON — Dona Elaine Martin, known affectionately as Dona, passed away peacefully on Wednesday May 1, 2024, in Wilmington, NC, at the age of 97.
Dona was born on May 18, 1926, in Greenfield, MA. Dona is preceded in death by her husband William P. Martin of 50 years; parents, Richard Gurney and Bernice Hortense Bates Bartlett; her daughter Nancy Martin Williams; her son Steven Martin; her brother Richard Bartlett; and sisters Joan Ettinger and Marilyn Valverde.
Dona dedicated her life to caring for others, having worked as a nurse until her retirement. Her compassion and dedication to her work left a lasting impact on all those she cared for throughout her career. In Wilmington, she continued her nursing career at GE on the second shift, spreading her light and kindness to all those she encountered.
Dona is survived by her loving daughter Vicki M. Davis and husband Jim; brother Duane C. Bartlett; sister Patricia Myers; six grandchildren Amy, Zachary, Lisa, Jimmy, Joseph, and William; as well as 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Dona was a faithful member for 56 years of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, where a memorial service will be held on her 98th birthday, Saturday, May 18, 2024 at 2 p.m. Her commitment to her faith and community was unwavering, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Dona’s legacy of love, compassion, and selflessness will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing her. May her spirit live on in the hearts of all who were touched by her kindness.
