WILMINGTON — Rita Roy Phinney, born in Dearborn, MI on January 13, 1934, danced her way into the next great adventure on April 3, 2024, in Wilmington, NC. She peacefully passed away at the age of 90, surrounded by her loving daughters.

Rita wore many hats throughout her life – from her days working in the Monogram Shop in Pompano Beach, FL alongside her partner Mac, to raising a bustling household filled with love and laughter. She found joy in the simple things, spending hours engrossed in intricate adult coloring art, challenging herself with crossword puzzles, and engaging in spirited rummy games with family and friends.

Holidays were Rita’s favorite times, with Christmas holding a special place in her heart. She meticulously wrapped gifts in beautiful packages, ensuring everyone felt the warmth of her love. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy, and she relished every moment spent with them.

Rita was known as the favorite aunt among her nieces and nephews, always ready with a kind word or a listening ear. She leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter that will be cherished by all who knew her.

Rita is preceded in death by her parents Antoine Roy and Helen (Martin) Roy, her partner Mac McMurtrie, her sons William Phinney and Ronald Phinney, and her sisters Cecilia Sullivan, Irene Chamberlin, and Helen Connors.

She is survived by her loving sister Therese Light; her daughters Linda Walker and her husband Steve, Laurie Augustin and her husband Gary, Merry McCulloch and her husband Randy, and Karen McDougall; grandchildren Brian Walker and wife Amy, Scott Walker and wife Julie, Stephanie Walker-Bagwell and husband Zach, Kara Ricks and partner Austen Hyatt; several great-grandchildren; Mac’s son Gregg and his daughters Sarah and Lindsey; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private funeral service will be held in her honor, with arrangements entrusted to Wilmington Funeral & Cremation Service – Leland Chapel. Rita’s spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved her, carrying her memory forward with each passing day.
