WILMINGTON — Benny Ray Hardison, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2024, in Wilmington, North Carolina. He was born on August 7, 1944, in Martin County, North Carolina. Benny was 79 years old at the time of his passing.
Benny dedicated 33 years of his life to General Electric, where he worked in Shipping and Receiving. He was known for his exceptional work ethic and commitment to his job. Outside of work, Benny found joy in coaching youth baseball, a role he fulfilled for most of his life. He was affectionately known as “Coach Benny” in his local community, where his guidance and love for the sport made a lasting impact on the lives of many young athletes. Additionally, he was a passionate fan of the UNC Tarheels and cherished any opportunity to cheer them on. Benny’s love for the beach was unparalleled, and he found solace and happiness whenever he had the chance to be by the ocean.
Benny was a member of the Elks Club in Wilmington and Oak Island, where he formed lifelong friendships and shared countless memorable moments. He was a valued presence within these communities and always ready to lend a helping hand. Benny’s warm smile, generous spirit, and unwavering dedication will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Benny is preceded in death by his father, Milton James Hardison, and his mother, Isabelle Hardison Brock.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and wonderful memories that will forever be cherished by his surviving family. His wife of 53 years, Lauretta “Laure” Lane Hardison. Benny’s children, Richard Hardison, Kimberly Blackman, and Cynthia Hickman and husband Mack, were his pride and joy. He adored his grandchildren, Lane Joyner and husband Greg, Colton Blackman, Dylan Hickman, and Ethan Hickman. Benny’s siblings, Milton Hardison, Doris Prendergast, James Hardison, Richard Brock and wife Carol, Bill Brock and wife Terry, Eddie Brock and wife Sharon, Susan Thompson and husband Marcus, will miss his presence dearly.
A Celebration of Life is to be held on Saturday, March 2, 2024 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Bill’s Front Porch. All are welcome to attend to remember Benny’s life.
