Abigail Brooks Steelhammer, 54

WILMINGTON — Abigail Brooks Steelhammer, lovingly known as Abby, passed away on January 16, 2024, at the age of 54. She was born on October 7, 1969, to Harold F. Greeson (deceased) (Sherry B. Greeson) and Doris L. Cotten (Roger C. Cotten, deceased). Abby was a beloved daughter, mother, sister, aunt, and friend. She is survived by her daughter, Gracie Brooks Steelhammer, whom she adored and cherished (and Gracie’s dad John Steelhammer). Abby’s memory will forever be treasured by her family, including her brothers Hank Greeson (Debbie), Craig Cotten (Abby), Mark Weaver (Corrie), Derrick Weaver (Heather), and Scott Weaver (Jenny). She was a doting aunt to her nieces and nephews, Maddox, Bryce, Christian, Hope (Emma), Gray, Patterson (Zach), Coleman (deceased), Jenson, Dolan, and Connelley. Abby’s loyal companion, her dog Doolie, brought her immense joy and comfort throughout her life. She was also greeted in heaven by her loved ones who passed before her, including Papa, Bumper, Coleman, Huck, Brinkley, Scottie, and Bugs.

Abby was a lifelong learner and achieved numerous academic accomplishments. She held a Bachelor of Arts degree, as well as certifications as a Registered Nurse, Master of Business Administration, and Master of Health Administration. Abby took great pride in her career as a nurse and healthcare administrator, where she made a significant impact on the lives of others. In her free time, Abby found solace in the beauty of nature. She loved spending time at the beach and the lake, where she could unwind and appreciate the serenity of the water. Abby took great joy in watching her daughter, Gracie, swim and engage in various activities. She also had a deep affection for animals and enjoyed feeding birds, bunnies, and deer.

Abby’s love for flowers and plants was evident, especially her fondness for sunflowers, lilies, hydrangeas, chrysanthemums, and gardenias in yellow, white, pink, and purple. She believed that these vibrant blooms symbolized the beauty of life. Abby cherished her time with family and friends, especially when accompanied by a glass of wine. She valued the connections she made and the memories created during these moments.

Abby’s journey began in Greensboro, where she grew up as part of two blended families, surrounded by her numerous brothers. In 1997, she settled in Mooresville with John and together they raised their beloved daughter, Gracie. In the final months of her life, Abby relocated to Wilmington to be closer to Gracie and the beach which she loved.

In early 2022, Abby received the devastating diagnosis of Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. Despite the challenges she faced, Abby chose to remain positive and embarked on a journey of self-discovery. Her unwavering faith, boundless hope, and indomitable courage were evident as she fought the good fight. Abby’s absence leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew her. However, her loved ones are left with cherished memories and heartwarming stories that will forever keep her spirit alive.

A service to celebrate Abby’s life will be held on February 3, 2024, at 10:30 am in Saint Patrick’s Episcopal Church, located at 164 Fairview Road, Mooresville, NC 28117. Memorial donations can be made to METAvivor (https://www.metavivor.org/take-action/donate/), an organization dedicated to supporting metastatic breast cancer research. Flowers are also welcome and can be delivered to the church.
