Ronald James Thompson, 71

WILMINGTON — Ronald James Thompson, also known as Jimmy or “R.J.”, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2023, at home in his hometown of Wilmington, North Carolina. He was born on February 21, 1952, in Wilmington, NC.

Ronald was a devoted and loving husband, brother, father, and grandfather. He was known for his kind and compassionate nature, always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His presence could light up a room, and his warm and friendly demeanor made him a beloved figure in his community.

He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Lona, his sister Jan, sister-in-law Kay, and his children Rustina (Rob), Clif (Rachel), and Tilia (Mike). Jimmy was also a cherished grandfather to Caleb, Avery Marie, and Lily. He leaves behind nieces and nephews Ariel, Christi, Amber, Jay, and Shelby, as well as great nieces and nephews Joel, Brennan, Addison, Alex, Blaire, Cruz, Link, and Jace.

Ronald was preceded in death by his parents GRC and Willadean, as well as his brother Richard.

Ronald attended New Hanover High School and enjoyed working at various theaters, including the Cardinal Theatre in Jacksonville, NC. where he met and married the love of his life. He also worked at Dupont and S&W.

Outside of his professional life, Ronald had a passion for photography and was a founding member of the Cape Fear Camera Club. He also dedicated 26 years to the Myrtle Grove Volunteer Fire Department, serving as fire prevention captain. His commitment to public service extended to his membership in REMO.

Ronald James Thompson will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His kind heart, generous spirit, and warm presence touched the lives of many. May he rest in peace, leaving behind a legacy of love and fond memories that will be forever treasured.
