WILMINGTON — Harry Ray Pope, known to his loved ones as Ray, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2023, in Durham, North Carolina. He was born on November 19, 1952, in Wilmington, North Carolina. Ray was 70 years old at the time of his passing.
Ray had a deep love for saltwater fishing and found solace in the calming waters. As an avid fan of Carolina , he cherished his trips to the mountains, where he reveled in the beauty of nature and the tranquility it offered.
Ray was a devoted family man, having been married to his beloved wife, Sue Pope, for 47 years. Together, they created a lifetime of memories. Their love and commitment served as an inspiration to all who knew them. Ray is also survived by his daughter, Brooke Messick, and son-in-law Jamey. He held a special place in his heart for his grandson, Easton Messick, who brought him immeasurable happiness.
In addition to his immediate family, Ray leaves behind his mother, Inez Pope, who provided him with love and guidance throughout his life. He was also a cherished brother to Terry Pope and Bruce Pope, with whom he shared a close bond. Along with Nephew- Matt Koonce (wife Lindsey Koonce) and nieces Melissa Molloy (husband William Molloy), Tara Watkins (Husband Jeremy Watkins), sister-in law Vonnie Perkins, (Husband Terry Perkins). Ray’s affection extended even to his furry companions, Gizzy and T.J., who brought him comfort and companionship.
Services to honor Ray’s life will be held as follows: a visitation will take place on Thursday evening from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Wilmington Funeral & Cremation Village Road Chapel in Leland. A graveside service will follow on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Skipper Family Cemetery.
Ray will be remembered for his kind heart, infectious laughter, and unwavering love for his family. His presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in eternal peace.
