WILMINGTON — Nellie Lanier Stuart, 97, of Wilmington, NC passed away at Trinity Grove on Tuesday March 21, 2023. Nell was the widow of Roland E. Stuart.
Nell was born in Chinquapin, NC on May 25, 1925, the daughter of the late Fennell and Betsy Lanier. She graduated from Chinquapin High School in 1942 and went to Raleigh Business School before moving to Wilmington, NC with her aunt and uncle Susie and RJ Holladay. She resided with them until 1954 when she married Roland. During this time, Aunt Susie had two children and Nell claimed them as her own. James and Melinda Holladay Hales who survive. Also proceeding her in death is her sister Margaret and husband Ed Futrell, and nephew Ranny Futrell.
After marrying they moved to Roland’s home of Baltimore, MD and lived there until 1966. While in Baltimore she obtained her cosmetology license and also worked for the B&O Railroad. They moved back to Wilmington to take care of her mother. In 1969 she started working at Corning Inc. and retired from there in 1991. She enjoyed knitting and working in her yard. She was a fateful member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where you could always find her in the kitchen working for the events that took place there.
She is also survived by her niece Sandra Futrell and nephews Norwood and Brent Futrell, Eddie Hales and wife Veronica, Jeff Hales and wife Natalie, Kris Hines and husband John. Susi Hamilton and husband Steve, Randy Holladay and wife Meg, sister-in-law Rhoda Whytsell, Abby Hines, Parker Hamilton, Griffin Hales, Finley Hales and Ransom Holladay.
Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 26, 2023 at the Oleander Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel. The family will see friends immediately following the service.
The family would like memorials be directed to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in her memory.
