WILMINGTON — The Reverend John H. Cawthorne, age 78, of Wilmington, NC died Tuesday, March 7, 2023, in the Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Center, Wilmington, NC. John was born on September 22, 1944, in Edgewood, Maryland to the late David M. Cawthorne and Lorraine Berg Cawthorne.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Pickett Cawthorne; his sister, Barbara Cawthorne Crafton of Metuchen, NJ; his sons, John D. Cawthorne and his wife, Janine, of Longs, SC and Ian Alexander and his wife, Jenny, of Taichung, Taiwan; his daughters, Laura Cawthorne Updyke and her husband, Craig, of Warrenton, VA, and Erica Cawthorne and her husband, Francis, of Alexandria, VA.; and eight grandchildren, Zachary, Rebecca, Andrew, Carter, Thomas, Aaron, Emmalynne and David.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, David Cawthorne and his granddaughter, Samantha Cawthorne.
John was a veteran of the United States Army and an Episcopalian Minister. He graduated from Bel Air High School in 1962, received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland and his M.Div. from The Episcopal Divinity School. John had a big voice and a big spirit. He loved serving others through the church and his family.
His visitation will be held Sunday, March 19, 2023, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel.
His funeral will be held Monday, March 20, 2023, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with the Reverend Caleb Lee officiating. His ashes will be interred at Christ Church, Rock Springs, MD at a later date.
