
WILMINGTON — George Richard Green of Wilmington, NC passed away peacefully on August 9, 2022. He was born in Maryville, MO on April 14, 1936, to Newell and Myrtle Green.
He earned a BA from Northwest Missouri State University in 1958 and a Ph.D in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1965. He served as an Economics Instructor at both the University of Pennsylvania as well as the University of Pittsburgh and as an Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Maryland. He later served as the Executive Director at Wharton Econometric Forecasting Associates and then as the Chief of the Business Outlook Division at the U.S. Department of Commerce until his retirement. He and his wife, Barbara Klein, whom he married in 1986, eventually retired to Wilmington NC in 2005.
George was an avid bridge player, having earned his Master Points in duplicate bridge. He was also an accomplished pianist, with a particular love of Jazz music. After retirement, George volunteered with AARP Tax Aid and helped prepare individual tax returns for free. He was a member of the River Road Unitarian Church in Bethesda, Maryland and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Wilmington, North Carolina.
George was predeceased by a brother, Gary, and a son, Dave. He is survived by his wife Barbara, who still lives in Wilmington, and his son Scott and his two grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Logan, from Montgomery County, Maryland. As George wished, he will be interred at a family plot in Missouri and his family will have a small private ceremony to celebrate his life.
