Martha Eleanor Lewis Bridgers, 87

LELAND — Martha Eleanor Lewis Bridgers, 87, of Leland left this earthly life for eternal home in Heaven on Thursday evening, March 24, 2022.

She was born on February 22, 1935, in Robeson County, NC; the daughter of the late Berry and Myrtice Warwick Lewis.  Martha was also preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Reverend Alton S. Bridgers; great granddaughter, Adeline Eleanor Henry; sisters, Hannah Rose Gooden, Thay White, Jean Gooden, and Glenys Thompson and brothers, Coegill Lewis and Wilton “Rusty” Lewis.

She was a member of Town Creek Baptist Church, although she was a vital part of many churches during her life as a pastor’s wife.

Surviving to cherish Martha’s love and memory, are her children, Alease Bridgers of Wallace, Tim Bridgers and wife, Diane of Leland, Hal Bridgers of Southport and Ruth B. Henry and husband, Tommie of Leland.  Martha was blessed with 12 grandchildren: 24 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.  Survivors also include her sister, Edith Stewart of Elizabethtown; brothers, Autry Lewis of Raleigh and Tommy White of Elizabethtown; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends that loved Martha dearly.

Martha was a loving mother and caring grandmother, sister and friend.  She enjoyed the simple things in life, but her greatest joy was family, especially her children and grandchildren. Martha was a diligent homemaker and a great cook.  With a joyful spirit she always filled her home with love and welcomed all who entered. No one ever went to Martha’s home without her inviting them to eat.  She was a good neighbor and friend and was loved by all who knew her.  Martha was not only a good mother and grandmother, but she was also a devoted wife who supported her husband and his ministry for many years.  With a big heart and a servant spirit, she later became her husband’s caregiver as she took great care of him during his extensive kidney illness until his death.   Martha worked very hard as she assisted him with dialysis in their home so he could be more comfortable and with his family.  Martha loved children.  After the death of her husband, she opened her home to numerous children during the day.  Her strong faith in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ helped her live her life as an example to her children, grandchildren and many others to follow. Martha will surely be missed but treasured memories will forever live in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
