WILMINGTON — Mary Lou Hunter Shay, 97, a resident of Wilmington, NC died on November 9, 2021.
Mary Lou was born on Sept 23, 1924 in Cleveland, Ohio. Raised in New Concord, Ohio, she met her husband of 59 years, John Robert Shay, while attending Muskingum College, and dedicated her life to supporting his career in both the Navy and FBI. While John was overseas, she studied at San Diego State and later taught elementary school in Cartaret, NJ and Alexandria, VA. Later in life she took up oil painting, and produced several significant works of art.
She and her husband lived in Creston, OH, Alexandria, VA, Pittsburgh & Erie, PA and Atlanta, GA before enjoying over 20 years of retirement in Jacksonville, Florida. They later moved to Virginia Beach, VA to be near family and friends. In 2008 Mary Lou relocated to Wilmington, NC with her family. She was living at the Davis Community in Porters Neck at the time of her death.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Robert Shay; father, Adam Armour Hunter, her mother, Corinne Jordon Hunter, and her sister, Connie Hunter Gross.
Ms. Shay is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Judy Shay, grandsons Clark Shay, Adam Shay and wife Sarah, and great-grandsons John Wagner Shay and James Garrett Shay all of Wilmington, NC, as well as several nieces and nephews.
We would like to thank the caregivers at Champions and Davis Healthcare Center as well as those from Lower Cape Fear LifeCare who so lovingly cared for her these past few years. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
