OAK ISLAND — Virginia Ruth Douthat, age 98, of Oak Island, North Carolina passed away on Tuesday, September 14, 2021. Ruth was born December 3, 1922 to the late Francis and Pearl Dawson.
In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin “Skeeter” Douthat; her sons, Michael Clay Douthat and Donald Ray Douthat; and her brothers, Howard Kenneth Dawson and Carl Dawson.
Ruth is survived by her sons, Richard Lee (Laura) Douthat, Sr. of Lexington, KY and Stephen Dale Douthat of Highland Springs, VA; her grandchildren, Richard Lee Douthat, Jr., Clay Wells Douthat, Natalee (Brandon) Clark, and Callie Douthat; and several great-grandchildren.
As a proud Marine Corps Veteran, Ruth served her country, rising to the rank of Corporal and was stationed at the Marine Corps Headquarters in Arlington, VA.
Ruth and Skeeter retired to Yaupon Beach in 1978 from Bluefield, WV where they had resided for many years with their family. Ruth was well known in the Southport/Oak Island Community. She was an active member of the Southport Presbyterian Church. Every year, Ruth looked forward to working with Margaret Rudd Realty’s annual Customer Appreciation Barbeque in conjunction with the Southport Presbyterian Church fundraiser. Ruth will be deeply missed by her loving family and friends.
A Memorial Service for Ruth will be held at a later date at Southport Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation be made to the Memorial Fund at the Southport Presbyterian Church.
