HAMPSTEAD — Harriet Horney Melvin was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She left this world after a short illness on August 31, 2021.
She was born to Giles and Harriet Horney in Chapel Hill. Harriet met and married Andrew “Drew” Melvin. Together they spent their life in Chapel Hill where they raised two children, Lillian and Andy.
Harriet and her family were founding members of St. Thomas More Catholic Church. At the time of her death, she was the longest serving parishioner in the history of the church. Much of her time was devoted to the church’s Women’s Club, where she served as president for many years. Harriet was the fourth generation of her family to graduate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was employed by her alma mater where she served as the operations director of one of the first computer systems in the country. After the birth of her children, she excelled in managing the household and raising both Lillian and Andy. Her devotion to the church and her family was recognized by all.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory; husband, Drew, of 60 years, children Lillian Whichard (John) and Andy Melvin, grandchildren Christopher (Michayla), Baird, Ainsley, and Austin, great-grandson Lucas. Sister Jane Davis (Jim) and many nieces and nephews.
Services honoring the life of Harriet will be held at St. Thomas More at 10:00 on September 21.
The family would like to honor and thank the staff at Arbor Landing at Hampstead, Horizons Memory Care, and Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Hospice for their care and devotion during Harriet’s illness. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Thomas More Church or the Alzheimer’s Association.
