HAMPSTEAD — Melvin “Mel’ John Miller, 87, of Hampstead, died Thursday, September 2, 2021, at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare.
He was born December 18, 1933 in Baltimore, MD, son of the late Melvin F. and Dorothy Blue Miller.
Mel proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps in both the Korean and Vietnam wars and retired as a Master Sargeant after 24 years of service. During his time of service he played golf for the USMC and won many tournaments. It was no surprise when he chose to become a PGA golf professional for his second career. He started at Jacksonville County Club as the Assistant Golf Professional after retiring from the USMC. He spent most of his golfing career at Olde Point County Club where worked beside his wife for over 20 years. During his time at Olde Point he had a hole in one on every par three, which is quite an accomplishment, plus developed many life-long friends who will miss him dearly.
He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Anne L. Miller; three children, Liz Edmundson (Robbie), Gene Collins (Suzanne) and Denise Kennedy all of Hampstead; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 10, 2021, at Andrews Hampstead Chapel with Msgr. Joseph Ntuwa officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mel’s memory may be made online or by mail to the D.A.V. at Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45350-0301.
