SURF CITY — Kathryn Slaughter Pyron Hall Kay, 92, passed away peacefully Tuesday night, August 31, 2021.
Born July 8, 1929, in Kinston NC she later moved to Wilmington, NC where she graduated from New Hanover High School. Kathryn went on to graduate from the School of Nursing in Danville, VA in 1950. During her nursing career she worked at Pender Memorial Hospital, Cape Fear Hospital and New Hanover Hospital. Kathryn loved nursing and helping others.
She was a member of Burgaw United Methodist Church and when she moved to Surf City, she was a faithful member of Emma Anderson Memorial Chapel for over 20 years and was on the Pastoral Care board for years. She was an honorary member of the Kiwanis Club of Topsail, an artist, seamstress, golfer, lover of music, dancing, traveling, shopping (especially shoes) and feeding the seagulls.
“Kat” was preceded in death by her parents John Mathew Slaughter Sr and Lola Belle Smith Slaughter, husband Boyce Calmer Kay, son Jim Pyron Jr, stepdaughter Peggy Simpson, sister Galenda Sandlin and brother Matt Slaughter and sister-in-law Jean Slaughter.
She is survived by her children: Jo Ann (Robert) Thomas, Jeff Pyron and Kay Pyron and stepson Dan (Jeni) Kay. Her grandchildren: Jeffrey Pyron, Jeremy (Brandi) Pyron, Benjamin Pyron, Jonathan Pyron, Nate (Sarah) Thomas, Daniel Pyron, Jim (Laura) Kay, Jon (Chris) Kay and Andrew (Kathryn) Simpson. In addition, Kat had many great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
A memorial service will be held September 11, 2021, at 12:30pm at Emma Anderson Memorial Chapel in Topsail, NC. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 at Sea Lawn Memorial Park in Hampstead, NC.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be given to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, Wilmington, NC or Emma Anderson Memorial Chapel in Topsail, NC.
