John “Jack” Morris Mudge, Sr, 89

WILMINGTON — John “Jack” Morris Mudge, Sr., passed away Tuesday, August 31, 2021.

He was born on August 18, 1932 in Lake Forest, Illinois to the late Margaret Cliggett Mudge and Morris “Steve” Mudge.

Jack attended the Hill School in Pennsylvania and graduated from Lake Forest Academy.  He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1955, earning a BA in History.  While at UVA,  Jack served as President of his fraternity, Chi Psi, and was a member of the Naval ROTC.  At graduation he was commissioned an Ensign and then spent two years on a destroyer in the Atlantic Fleet.

On November 1, 1958, Jack married Sidney Wollerton of Philadelphia at the Washington Memorial Chapel in Valley Forge, PA.  He was employed 29 years with the A.C. Nielsen Company, where he worked for the food and drug index in New York region.  He retired as a vice president in the New York City office.

Over the years, Jack supported his children’s interest in scouting, sports, camping and school.  An avid golfer, he looked forward to retiring to warmer climates.  A former member of the Springdale Golf Club in Princeton, NJ, was happy to move to and join the Porters Neck Country Club in Wilmington.

In 2012, Jack and Sidney moved down the road from Porters Neck Plantation to Plantation Village where Jack loved to swim, serve on committees and enjoyed walking their dog, Tara, in the beautiful community.

Jack is survived by his wife, Sidney, and two children:  Margo Williams (husband John) and son, John Mudge Jr.; his step-sister, Sally Anderson; as well as Granddaughters:  Brianne, Whitney, Danielle and Hannah.  Jack was predeceased by his parents, his step-father, and step-brother, Stanley D. Anderson, Jr.

Memorial Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the St. Andrew’s On-the -Sound Episcopal Church in Wilmington NC, Associate Appreciation Fund of Plantation Village or the North Carolina Library for the Blind in Raleigh NC.

Funeral Services will be at Saint Andrew’s On-the-Sound Episcopal Church in Wilmington, NC at 11:00 am followed by a grave side interment.
