George Evangelo Fanady, 83

WILMINGTON — George Evangelo Fanady, 83, who was born in Parkersburg, WV, to Manuel and Evangeline Fanady on October 5, 1937, passed away on August18, 2021, succumbing to complications from his five year battle with Parkinson’s disease.

George was first generation born in the USA, to Manuel & Evangeline, who were Iegal immigrants from Greece. They came to the USA in search of a better way of life and embraced its culture, values, work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit.

George served in the US Air Force for four years following his high school graduation. When his tour of duty was completed, he attended Potomac State College, WV, and graduated from Marietta College, Marietta, Ohio, with a degree in mathematics.

During his corporate career, George was employed by Bell Labs, National Cash Register and McDonnell Douglas Automation in the emerging computer field. After departing the corporate world, he started his own Northern Virginia based real estate brokerage firm. He thoroughly enjoyed selling commercial real estate.

George is preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Amelia Vacolas. George is survived by the love of his life, Mary. Recently, the celebrated 60 years of marriage. Children include Rebecca McGill (David), George Jr., (Holly) and Gregory (Maureen). Grandchildren are Marissa and Kyle McGill, Ryan, Katie and Rachel Fanady, Parker Fanady Metheny and Sara Scalzo. In addition, he is survived by his nephews, John & Steve Vacolas, two uncles, one aunt & many cousins.

George and Mary retired to Topsail Beach, NC in 1996, and embraced the community and lifestyle. An avid fisherman, George enjoyed surf fishing, clamming and crabbing. After several years of these activities, George turned to golf. He enjoyed this sport thoroughly as well as playing bridge and gardening. Leaving the island life, George and Mary moved to Porters Neck Country Club. Regardless of where he lived, George enjoyed cooking. He was known for his culinary skills and for sharing his creations with family and friends.

A celebration of life will be held at Wesleyan Chapel UMC on August 28th at 11AM. Family burial immediately following the service and a reception lunch at Porters Neck Country Club at 1PM.
