WILMINGTON — Janice Specter Kingoff, 84, died Tuesday, July 20, 2021, after a bout with pancreatic cancer.
Janice was born June 5, 1937, in Richmond, Virginia, the daughter of the late Hyman and Bertha Specter. She graduated from Greenville County High School in Emporia, Virginia, attended Women’s College in Greensboro and graduated from UNCW in 1977 with a degree in business.
Mrs. Kingoff is survived by her two sons, Michael Kingoff (Vanessa Diaz) and Andrew Kingoff; and “adopted” daughter, Koula Poulos Katsikis. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, William Kingoff; son, Robert Kingoff; and brother, Roland Specter. Left to cherish her memory are numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who played an important role in her life.
Mrs. Kingoff was a part owner of Kingoff’s Jewelers and worked in the family business for 63 years. Janice dedicated a lifetime of service to her family, community and synagogue. She served as president of the Friends of UNCW, UNCW Museum of World Culture, Community Concert Board, Wilmington Hadassah, and Sisterhood of B’nai Israel Synagogue. She was Chairman of Women’s United Jewish Appeal, vice president of the League of Women Voters and served on the UNCW Foundation Board of Directors. She was a volunteer in the New Hanover County Public School System in numerous reading programs, Brownie and Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout leader and the Good Shepherd Center. She was a board member of B’nai Israel Synagogue and member of the Hadassah Lions of Judah Society. In 1997, Janice received the Distinguished Alumni Award from UNCW. She continued her studies at UNCW in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. She was especially proud to have served as the pre-game cheerleader for basketball Coach Kevin Keatts during his tenure at UNCW.
Janice loved a full dinner table during the holidays, UNCW basketball games, having family and friends visit at her Wrightsville Beach home, and sharing her “prized” roses with friends and strangers.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 23, at B’nai Israel Cemetery, 307 N. 18th St., Wilmington. Pallbearers will be Mark Specter, Kevin Specter, Sander Retchin, Steven Soffin, Daniel B. Soffin and David Leinwand.
