WILMINGTON — Kenneth Lewis Harris, 69, passed away Friday, June 25, 2021. He was born July 16, 1951, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to the late George Lewis and Ethel (Everette) Harris.
He was educated in the Philadelphia public school system and later attended Fisk University, graduating in 1973 as a proud Fiskite! He was married shortly after college and had one child, Karim. Kenneth began working in the insurance industry almost immediately after college, and over the years, was extremely successful working for a number of major insurance companies. In 1982, he married Marlyn (Woods) and was a dedicated and devoted husband and father.
In 1989, they relocated to Arizona, where he and Marlyn lived for over 20 years. While there, they rekindled his childhood interest in equestrian life. They spent countless hours riding, camping, boarding and caring for their horses. This “hobby” lent itself to meeting many people and making lasting friendships. He enjoyed his work in the insurance industry during the week and loved being a cowboy on the weekends.
In 2009, Kenneth and Marlyn relocated to North Carolina to be close to friends, family, and most importantly, their grandchildren. He retired in 2016 from Scottsdale Insurance Company. He was an avid reader and lover of history and sports. Ask him any historical fact or sport stat, and he most likely would have the answer. He was passionate about giving back to his alma mater and spending time with family and friends.
Kenneth is survived by his wife, Marlyn; sister, Judith E. Harris of Massachusetts; brother, John F. Harris of Pennsylvania; son, Karim Harris (Ava) of Georgia; stepdaughter, Angela Yelverton (Aaron) of New Jersey; three granddaughter;, one grandson; nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of extended family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Fisk University: John R. Lewis Institute of Social Justice In Honor of Kenneth L. Harris, Class of 1973.
