GREENSBORO — Ida Cherry Blalock, 95, our loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away Saturday, June 12, 2021.
Ida is survived by her children, June Blalock (Bob Jambou), Bill Blalock Jr. (Clara) and Vicki Hite (David); grandchildren, Chris Blalock (Dani) and Philip Blalock (Dare); great-grandsons, Jakob Lanning and Carter Blalock; and great-granddaughter, Aurora Blalock.
Ida was born July 3, 1925, in Greenville. Ida grew up on a tobacco farm with her parents and two sisters. After high school, she moved to Raleigh to attend business school. She worked for the state Employment Security Commission during World War II, working in various towns in North Carolina before returning to Raleigh to live. It is in Raleigh, after the war, that she met her husband Bill Blalock, who was a student at North Carolina State. They married at the First Presbyterian Church in Raleigh in 1948. Ida and Bill were happily married for 67 years until Bill passed away in July 2015 in Wilmington, where they had been living for 36 years. Ida moved to Spring Arbor of Greensboro in March 2016.
Ida and Bill moved a number of times during their life together, living in Pennsylvania, Kansas and Maryland before returning to North Carolina. Ida enjoyed playing bridge, doing crossword puzzles, being outdoors in her garden, and window shopping in antique stores. But, spending time with her family was always most important to her. She had an interest in family history and had many photographs that she used to tell stories of her past. Ida was always active in church and she was a member of St. Andrews Covenant Presbyterian Church in Wilmington for many years.
A memorial service for Ida will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 19, at Andrews Mortuary on Market Street, Wilmington. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
