Gregg Thomas Kochakji, 46, passed away Tuesday, June 1, 2021, after a courageous three-year battle with Bulbar ALS onset.
Gregg was born April 8, 1975, in Englewood, New Jersey, the son of Tom and Betty Lou Kochakji of West Milford, New Jersey. Gregg is survived by his loving wife, Katherine Holt Kochakji; daughter, Kate Kochakji; son Holt Kochakji; and two brothers, Todd and Brian Kochakji of Point Pleasant, New Jersey. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Victor and Gloria Kochakji and William and Elizabeth Cox.
Gregg was a competitive high school wrestler and football player at West Milford High School in New Jersey. His love for sports continued in college at UNCW, where he played rugby for several years.
Gregg graduated from UNCW and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education and his Master’s Degree in Instructional Design and Technology. He taught at Pender High School and Heide Trask High School for 19 years in Pender County. His resignation in 2018, after his diagnosis, was one of the most difficult decisions he ever had to make. He loved teaching, and most importantly, loved his students.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Sunday, June 6, at Oleander Memorial Gardens, 306 Bradley Drive, Wilmington, with the Rev. Dr. Stan Smith officiating. Later in the afternoon, a celebration of life service will be held from 3 to 6 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Dr. Stan Smith, at White Feather Farm, 1135 Edgewater Club Road, Wilmington.
