Rita Elizabeth Harding, 97, lived her life with gusto and fortitude

Rita Elizabeth Harding

Rita Elizabeth Harding, 97, died at home Tuesday, May 4, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Wesley Glen Harding.

In her final days, she was resilient and coherent, which matched the way she lived — with gusto and fortitude. Her body failed, but not her mind.

She is survived by family and friends committed to honoring her memory by extending the beauty, truth and goodness she maintained throughout her 97 years. Sometimes with grace, sometimes with a sharp tongue, she stood on the side of justice and mercy, siding always with the less fortunate. She prayed daily for those in her orbit of love, and clung to Christ as her guide and hope.

She didn’t win awards, or garner public acclaim, she simply lived her life for the sake of others; those who survive her will have to find a way to live up to that high calling.

She leaves behind her daughters, Frances Dix and Louisa Thelen, and her spouse, Jim Thelen; four granddaughters, Marie Hulme “Liz” Adam, and her spouse, Erdal Adam, Theresa Hulme, Crystal Woodford and Danielle Woodford Fletcher; and four great-grandchildren, Hannah Sibel Adam, Phoebe Nuran Adam, Silas Joseph Adam and Carmella Westbrook.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, May 12, at All Saints Catholic Church, 18737 U.S. Highway 17 North, Hampstead. Msgr. Ntuwa will preside. A viewing will be held at church from noon until the time of services.
