Weldon Lee Matthews

WILMINGTON — Weldon Lee Matthews, 69, loving husband, daddy and Papa, passed away Sunday, March, 21, 2021. Weldon, affectionately called “Buggs,” was born Jan 24, 1952, in Fayetteville.

He graduated from Elizabethtown High School in 1970 and attended East Carolina University that fall. He was a machinist and worked for General Electric in Wilmington for 32 years. On Dec. 22, 1971, he married Sandra Lane Varnam. Together, they raised two sons and two daughters.

Weldon had a passion for music and was an active member of the choir at Pine Valley Church of God. He loved to sing and play guitar. He loved to hunt and fish. He spent many hours working on his boat and waiting for Sea Tow to pick him up when it broke down. He was known for telling stories and was always the life of the party. He enjoyed watching football and baseball, especially when his grandchildren were playing; or he could cheer for his favorite team, Duke University.

Weldon is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sandra; children, Jon Matthews, Rebecca and Keith Stanley, Sarah and Thomas Durham and Samuel Matthews; and five grandchildren, Macey, Avery, Aubrey, Oliver and Candon, who were the lights of his life. He is also survived by his siblings, Theresa and Bo Phipps, Julia Spaulding, Kenneth and Patty White, Tommy White; and maternal aunt, Kay Tatum.

The family will receive friends at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 27, followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m., at Pine Valley Church of God, 3810 Shipyard Blvd., Wilmington. The family would like to thank Dr. Lindsey Prochaska and Lower Cape Fear Hospice for their dedication to Weldon’s care during his battle with lymphoma.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Weldon’s name may be made to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401; or Zimmer Cancer Center, 2001 S. 17th St., Wilmington, NC 28401.
