WILMINGTON — Albert Lee ‘Al’ Lambeth Jr. (Gator), 76, passed away peacefully Monday, March 22, 2021, surrounded by his loving wife and family. He was born July 23, 1944, in Wilmington. He was the son of the late Albert Lee Lambeth Sr. and Jean Buchanan Lambeth.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Sally Best Lambeth; sons, Robert Lee Lambeth, and his wife, Libby, and Scott Gordon Lambeth. He was a proud grandfather to Hailey M. Lambeth, Megan E. Lambeth and Hunter L. Lambeth.
He graduated from New Hanover High School in 1962. He attended UNC-Chapel Hill and graduated from Campbell University. He was an avid music fan and played the drums during college years. Later, he was the drummer for the DixieLand Band.
Al worked for the U.S. Treasury Department for 30 years. He received the Gallatin Award upon retirement. He received a Presidential Honor for one of his high profile cases. He also taught classes in Atlanta, Georgia, for many years, sharing his knowledge with young trainees. Upon retirement, he served as a consultant to the J.K. Harris Company in Charleston, South Carolina.
Upon retirement, Al and Sally loved to take vacations to enjoy each other’s company on their many cruises. They particularly enjoyed the Panama Canal as well as Alaska. Al was a people person. He loved to have gatherings in his neighborhood on Dogwood Lane. He was well-liked and would always offer a helping hand.
He was an avid fisherman and could often be seen trawling around Rich’s Inlet for Spanish mackerel. He also enjoyed net fishing for spots along the Intercoastal Waterway. He was a senior member of the Joe Wheeler Fishing group. He looked forward to the Joe Wheeler annual reunion and spent their time fishing on the Tennessee River for and crappie.
