Joyce E. Strickland

WILMINGTON — Joyce E. Strickland, 81, peacefully passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2021. She was the beloved wife of the late William Graham Strickland for 63 years. Born June 3, 1939, she was the first born to Luella Sullivan and Harvey Raeford Smith.

Joyce worked at Dupont for many years. In her retirement, she poured her passion into opening her own business, Susie’s Doll & Gifts. She met her husband in 1954 when she took notice of him driving by her house in his vehicle. Joyce was known for putting others’ needs before her own and became the glue that held her ever-growing family together. She especially loved caring for them during Thanksgiving and Christmas by making sure her home was open to all family and friends and making sure everyone had enough food. She also enjoyed gardening and providing love and care to her four-legged friends! She was beloved by all who knew her.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, William Gerald Strickland; and brothers, William Aubrey Smith and Harvey Raeford Smith Jr.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan Farren, and her husband, Mark; grandchildren, William Brandon Farren and William Gerrad Strickland; sisters, Janice S. Kerr, Joann Chestnut, and her husband, Cecil; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, visitation services will be private. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 24, at Oleander Memorial Gardens, Wilmington.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the wonderful care that Amedisys Hospice of Greenville, South Carolina, gave to Joyce. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to them at
