
WILMINGTON — Clyde Eugene “Gene” Harris, 79, died Friday, Jan. 22, 2021, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
He was born Feb. 6, 1941, in Charlottesville, the son of the late Robert E. and Lola Castle Harris.
Gene graduated from Albemarle County High School and attended classes at the University of Virginia.
He honorably served in the U.S. Army as a medic with tours of duty in San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Walter Reed Army Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland.
He continued his career at NIH National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, from which he retired in 1996 as the chief of contracts.
In retirement, he served as president of the Winchester 2 Homeowners Association, as well as president of the Men’s Group at Wesley Memorial UMC.
Gene is survived by his wife, Nancy McConchie Harris; daughter, Susan “Sunny” Salguero; son, Robert J. Harris; son-in-law, Michael Brassfield; three grandchildren, Lucas, Aiden and Ethan Salguero; brother, Thomas Harris; and sister-in-law, Janice Street.
A small private service for family and close friends will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 1, at Wesley Memorial UMC with the Rev. Partin officiating.
In lieu of flowers, or should friends desire, contributions in his memory may be made to Wesley Fellowship Sunday School Class, Wesley Memorial UMC of Wilmington, of which he was a member.
