Gurine Margaret Kunigel, 86, found great joy in the simplest of things

Gurine Margaret Kunigel

HAMPSTEAD — Gurine Margaret Kunigel, 86, passed gently from her earthy life Thursday, Feb. 13, 2020, at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare in Wilmington.

She was born April 19, 1933, in Queens, New York, and was the daughter of the late Frank Emerson Serviss and Frieda Emily Shields Serviss. Also remembered are her husband, Richard Kunigel; great-granddaughter, Chloe Kunigel; and sister, Frieda Gangi, all who preceded Gurine in death.

Gurine is survived by her daughters, Karen Scheliga (Joe), Gail Migliara (Anthony), Christine Cavileer and Arlene McMillan (Ted); grandchildren, Amy Sheridan (Jeremy), Greg Scheliga (Britt), Richard Migliara (Adrianne George), Mark Kunigel (Krystle) and Jesse Miller; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Gurine was a devoted wife and loving mother; the glue that held her family together with great caring and strength. She found great joy in the simplest of things, but her greatest joy was family, which meant the world to her. Gurine enjoyed cooking for family and was a fantastic cook. She loved all of God’s wonderful creations, especially all waterways, where she loved to swim.

When you entered her home, you never knew where furniture may be moved to or what color the walls may be painted as she loved to decorate and change things around. Affectionately, known as “Miss Kitty” by her family because her family said she literally had nine lives. Gurine’s family is grateful to God for her life and her passing leaves a big hole in their hearts.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 15, in Burgaw Cemetery with the Rev. Merrell McKoy conducting the service.

Share online condolences with the family at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home.
