WILMINGTON — Mary Alice Moore, 53, lost her battle with cancer Friday, Sept. 27, 2019, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCare Center. Mary was born March 15, 1966, at the Naval Base in Rota, Spain, to Charles and the late Alice Wolner.
Mary graduated from Westmorland High School in 1984 in Westmoreland, New York, as class president. While in high school, she was a proud member of the softball team, where she pitched a no-hitter game leading her team to victory. Mary graduated from Mohawk Valley Community College in Rome, New York, in 1987.
Mary had a passion for traveling and has lived in Holland, California, Nevada, Massachusetts and settled in North Carolina in 1995.
Mary was the proud mother of Samantha Herrick, Phoenix Herrick and Joseph Moore. Mary was also “Mom” to Leah Chappell and Cory Taormina, who will become official family members in 2020.
Mary worked in the service industry for over 20 years and loved working at Wilmington International Airport (ILM) as a customer service agent for US Airways, which became American Airlines. She treated each and every customer with the utmost care and respect and always tried to bump them to first class, get them a better connection, or get them another bag checked. Whatever it took to make their travel better, she did it. She adored her coworkers and taught them every trick in (and out) of the book.
When Mary was not working, she loved to travel to Europe; tropical islands, especially Turks and Caicos; or any destination that served margaritas and had a beach. Mary also enjoyed baseball, especially cheering on the Boston Red Sox. The last four years were the best travel years of all with her soulmate, Rob Allan.
For the last 13 years, Mary attended Port City Community Church, Wilmington, with her son, Joe.
Mary is survived by her father, Charles Wolner; children, Sam Herrick (Leah Chappell), Phoenix Herrick (Cory Taormina) and Joe Moore; boyfriend, best friend and fellow Red Sox fan, Rob Allan; sisters, Lynn (Scott) Burdick and Shoie (David) McCarthy; childhood lifelong friend, Dede O’Dell; nieces, Ava McCarthy, Quinn McCarthy and Sarah Kate Burdick; and nephew, Justin Burdick. She was preceded in death by her mother, Alice Wolner; sister, Kelly Wolner; and favorite cousin, Brian Moody.
A funeral service will be held at noon, Tuesday, Oct. 1, at Port City Community Church, 250 Vision Drive, Wilmington. Calling hours will be held from 11 a.m. to noon prior to services at the church.
