WILMINGTON — Alejandro “Alex” Lopez, 87, formerly of Alden, New York, passed away Friday, Aug. 16, 2019.
He was born March 10, 1932, in Anasco, Puerto Rico, son of the late Rosendo Santiago and Maria Rodriguez Lopez; beloved husband of the late Concetta Ciavarro and the late Charlotte Wasielewski; and brother of the late Gilbert, Vincent, Angel, Martin and Fabian.
He is survived by dear friends, Ronald and Carol Daniels, Ramon and Linda Quimonez; special caregiver, Phyllis; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; godchildren; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Alex was a 4th degree knight and belonged to Knights of Columbus Council 12017. He was a longtime member of the Lions Club and a past president of the Lions Club in Alden, New York.
Alex was born in Anasco, Puerto Rico, and arrived in Tampa, Florida, in 1951. He moved to Buffalo, New York, in 1955 and married the late Concetta Ciavarro in 1959. They moved to Alden, New York, in 1975. Alex had different jobs through his working career. He worked at Dona Hanna Coke and at Dresser Rand and retired as a custodian from the Erie County Home and Infirmary in 1996. He and his second wife, Charlotte Wasielewski, moved to Wilmington in 1996. They enjoyed their retirement together until she passed away in 2003.
Alex liked to hunt and fish. He always had a smile and a kind word. He spent a lot of time with family and friends and enjoyed his many nieces and nephews and godchildren as they grew up. He was a true community servant and spent his last years with his dear friends in Wilmington.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 23, at Andrews Market Street Chapel. A funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 24, at St. Mark Catholic Church.
