Ray D. Barnhardt, 70, Navy veteran who served three tours during the Vietnam War

LELAND — Ray D. Barnhardt, 70, of Sandy Creek, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2019, at his residence.

He was born in Concord, the son of the late Jacob Ray Barnhardt and Barbara Deas Barnhardt. Also remembered is his son, Jacob Ray Barnhardt II, who preceded him in death.

Surviving are his wife, Ramona Barnhardt; three daughters, Deann Barnhardt, Rene’ Barnhardt (Mike Haliski) and Erin McLeod (Johnathan); four grandchildren, Kaya, Iley, Alana and Addison; great-granddaughter, Kaya Ryan; and one brother, Craig Barnhardt. He will also be missed by his beloved therapy dogs.

Ray was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served three tours during the Vietnam War, an experience that molded and shaped his life and the man who he became. Ray was loyal and well respected in all that he did. Blessed with a big and caring heart, he had a great love of family and was always protective of them. He also loved his church as well as his coworkers and was loved and respected in return by them.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 22, at Wilmington First Pentecostal Church. Burial with military honors will follow in Oleander Memorial Gardens.
