WINNABOW — Shirley Cumbee, 82, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2018, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington.
She was born Jan. 28, 1936 to the late Spurgeon Parrish and Mamie P. Meares. Shirley was an active member of Town Creek Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and served on numerous committees of the church. She loved the Lord and enjoyed life to the fullest. She was always hopeful and mindful of others.
Shirley is survived by her husband, William of the home; daughter, Beverly Edwards of Winnabow; three sons, the Rev. Richard Edwards, and his wife, Brenda, of Jacksonville, Florida, James Troy (Jimmy) Edwards, and his wife, Yvonne, of Wilmington, William (Billy) Cumbee Jr., and his wife, Kassie, of Leland; one brother, Ronnie Meares of Lumberton; six wonderful grandchildren, Adrienne Gibbs, Angela Eisman, Jennifer Cumbee, Shane and Kayla Edwards and Elizabeth Cumbee; two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Savannah Gibbs; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 18, at Town Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Vic Potter and the Rev. Richard Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Scott Phillips, Andrew Phillips, Shane Maultsby, Neil Maultsby, Stevie Sullivan, and Greg Benton. Honorary pallbearers will be Hugh Phillips, Tom Maultsby, B.J. Mills, Johnnie Smith, and Bob Lowery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 17, at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service, Southport.
