CALABASH — The family of Margie Ruth Thomas, 90, announces her passing on the morning of Wednesday, May 2, 2018. Her spirit left while in her daughter’s arms, ready to soar to her heavenly Father and join her family before her.
She talked to God daily, praising him and thanking him for her family and taking care of her. She joins her husband of 62 years, George Pierce Thomas. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Carol Ann Graham, and her husband, Ernie Graham; grandchildren, Shon, Autumn, Robin, Hannah, Jesse, David and Buddy; son, Wiley Pierce Thomas, and his deceased wife, Patricia Coker Thomas; grandchildren, Joy and Monica. Her nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren will fondly remember her. She leaves behind her sister, Edna Ann Tatum; and brother, Roy Martin Rose. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Lillie Mae Darby, Cora Lee, Bill Rose and Columbus Marshal (Bud) Rose.
Margie was the true pioneer woman. Her Cherokee heritage was revealed in her beautiful black hair turned white and peace-loving, strong spirit. Her daily life consisted of life skills honed from prior generations, gardening, preserving food for family (given freely to all), gathering wood, clearing land, cleaning wild game animals harvested by George and cooking the best foods on the planet. She sent ham biscuits home for her grandchildren, who fought over them. She sewed clothes for all, including the prettiest Easter dresses for her granddaughters and the best flannel shirts for her husband!
In her last years, she was the loving ear for her family, offering great advice with humor, and loved and entertained the people of Woodard’s Adult Health Center.
Margie lived her life being everyone’s best advocate, a real “life coach,” always being kind to those she met and remembering them in her prayers. Margie was able to spend her time as a widow with Wiley’s family in Atlanta and in North Carolina with Carol’s family.
Family was her number one love, second being the great outdoors, loving her last years on her porch watching her great-grandchildren playing in the woods, and the birds and squirrels who parked at her window eating. She lived her faith daily and blessed her family immensely, showing us how to grow old with grace. As her life was at the end, she proclaimed she was “at peace” on the patio of Lower Cape Fear Hospice, where the staff said, “You don’t have to keep thanking us!” And her reply was, “Yes, I do!”
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 25, 2018, at Mistletoe State Park, Appling, Georgia. It was her request to gather family and friends and celebrate their life in her favorite family location, Clarks Hill Lake. For more information on this service, call 843-602-9486.
