WILMINGTON — Charles “Chuck” Mayne, 89, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2018, after a brief illness.
He was born Jan. 18, 1929, the son of the late Charles W. Mayne and Helen Connor Mayne. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jack W. Mayne; and grandson, Zachary J. Mayne.
Chuck joined the U.S. Army right after graduating from Amherst High School in New York, just after World War II. He was deployed to Japan where he was a lead jailer at Sugamo Prison for the Japanese war criminals including general of the Imperial Japanese Army, Hideki Tojo.
After the service he returned to Buffalo, N.Y., attended the University of Buffalo and majored in mechanical engineering. This is also when he met his sweetheart of 64 years, Marlene (Blechinger) Mayne, who lived across the street from his family. They spent their early years in Buffalo and then moved to Pittsford, N.Y. They eventually moved to Wilmington, N.C., in 1996 and attended the Lutheran Church of the Reconciliation.
Chuck loved life and was an avid snow skier, loved boating, played semi-pro hockey, enjoyed his koi fish pond and model trains. His professional career consisted of: licensed plumber; founder of three retail bath stores; president of Bathtique’s 150 stores; and started Carolina Closets in Wilmington.
He dearly loved his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Marlene Mayne; sons, Gregory Scott Mayne, and his wife, Karen, of Farmington, N.Y., and Steven Charles Mayne, and his wife, Susan, of Wendell, N.C.; and grandchildren, Victoria, Gregory II, Sarah and Shannon.
A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 3, at Lutheran Church of Reconciliation with the Pastor Bill Milholland officiating. The family will receive friends after the ceremony.
Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Church of Reconciliation, 7500 Market Street, Wilmington, NC 28411.
