Janice Walker Truelove, 70, dedicated volunteer at Help Center of Federal Point

Janice Walker Truelove

KURE BEACH — Janice Walker Truelove, 70, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 14, 2017, surrounded by her family.

Janice was born April 13, 1947, in Staten Island, N.Y., and was the eldest daughter of the late Charles Robert Walker and the late Margaret Noles Walker.

She was a devoted mother who served in the U.S. Navy in the role of wife and first mate to her beloved husband of 50 years, retired U.S. Navy Chief Warrant Officer 4 Joseph A. Truelove. She later worked as a chartered property casualty underwriter. Jan graduated from St. Peter’s High School for Girls, Staten Island, in 1965, married in 1967. She earned a B.S. degree from the University of Maryland in 1978 and worked at GEICO in Maryland for 22 years before retiring to North Carolina. Known for her wit and hospitality, Jan volunteered for more than a decade at the Help Center of Federal Point, enjoyed providing homemade specialties as part of the Meals Ministry of the Immaculate Conception Church and cooked and served at the Katie B. Hines Senior Center of Pleasure Island.

She loved “rollin'” with the water aerobics club at the Beach Walk community, regular Mah Jongg games, and extreme bargain shopping. Jan and Joe traveled broadly, first with the Navy, and later on wonderful, long cruises.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Julia Truelove of Raleigh, Jo-Ellen Truelove O’Dell, and her husband, David, of Catonsville, Md., and Jennifer Truelove of New York City. She is also survived by her pride and joy, grandchildren Jackson and Emily. She leaves her three siblings, Ann Walker Hurley, and her husband, Ray Hurley, Karen Walker Sugarman, and her partner, Walter Maher, and Charles R. Walker III, and his wife, Angela Phipps Walker.

A funeral Mass will be held at 9 a.m., Monday, Sept. 18, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. All friends and family are welcome to attend. Interment will be private. Visitors may call upon the family from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 17, at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel, 4108 S. College Road, Wilmington. (910) 791-7055.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Help Center of Federal Point and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society would be appreciated.

Her family knows that friends’ loving memories of Jan will remain as fresh and delightful as a generous slice of her signature pound cake, placed in one of her many colorful pieces of vintage Tupperware, and sent home with love.
