WILMINGTON — Marilyn Jane Miller von Oesen died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2016, in Wilmington, N.C., with her family by her side.
Marilyn von Oesen was born on Dec. 15, 1933, in Jackson, Ohio, the daughter of the late Homer and Jane Nicholson Miller. Mrs. von Oesen taught accounting and office machines at Miller Motte Business College from 1954 until 1979, when her family sold the school.
Mrs. von Oesen was active in the life of her community participating in many projects for the NC Junior Sorosis of Wilmington. Mrs. von Oesen was also a volunteer for the Children’s Home Society of N.C. She served on the board of the Pender County Friends of the Library. Mrs. von Oesen was president of the Smocking Guild of Wilmington. She served as a judge for quilting, smocking and needlepoint exhibitions in Pender and New Hanover counties.
Mrs. von Oesen was an active volunteer at St. Mary’s Church, an Episcopal and Lutheran Community in Burgaw. She was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and an honorary member of the Hanover Seaside Club.
Mrs. von Oesen is preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, John Averitt von Oesen Sr. She is also preceded in death by her son, John.
Mrs. von Oesen was lovingly devoted to caring for him for 33 years. She is survived by her daughter, Anna von Oesen Hughes and son-in-law, Frank Mackey Hughes of Baltimore, Md.; and her grandchildren, Mackey Hughes III of Wilmington, NC; Von Hughes of Honolulu, Hawaii; and Miller Hughes of New York, N.Y.
A graveside service will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016 at Oakdale Cemetery, Wilmington. The Rev. Mark Opgrand of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church will be officiating.
