CASTLE HAYNE – Sylvester “Buddy” Adkins, 93, of Castle Hayne, passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2016, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center in Wilmington.

He was born in Catlettsburg, Kentucky, on April 3, 1923, son of the late Dewey Adkins and Dixie Caldwell Adkins Galloway.

Mr. Adkins was a member of Northside Baptist Church. He retired from the United States Air Force, having served more than 21 years in the United States, Europe, Germany, Korea and Hawaii. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. After retirement from the military, he worked at Sunny Point for 14 years as an electronics technician.

Surviving is his wife of 70 years, Carrie Congleton Adkins (married January 16, 1946); son, Donald David Adkins and wife Connie of Wilmington; special family members, Larry Simmons and wife Sharon of Wilmington, Diane VonCannon and Elizabeth Abbott; grandchildren, Lisa Turner and Jason Simmons and wife, Audria; great-grandchildren, Lindsay Turner, Alexis Turner, Zalen Simmons and Zarana Simmons; and five great-great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Kathryn Marie Simmons passed away in 2009.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, 2016, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, 2016, at Andrews Market Street Chapel. Interment will follow in Oleander Memorial Gardens with military honors accorded by the United States Air Force.

In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC, 28401, or St. Jude’s Hospital for Children.
